Mumbai

Mumbai is India's money city. If you work in finance, trade, media or a head office, you will end up here sooner or later.

The economy

  • Banking, asset management, insurance and the stock exchanges
  • Corporate headquarters of many Indian and international companies
  • Media, film and entertainment
  • Shipping, ports and trade
  • Pharmaceuticals and chemicals in the wider region

Many European banks, insurers, luxury brands and consultancies have their Indian headquarters in Mumbai.

Where people live

  • Bandra and Khar: popular with professionals, lively, seafront promenade
  • Worli and Lower Parel: close to business districts, many high-rise residences
  • South Mumbai (Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Malabar Hill): historic, close to older business districts
  • Powai: a self-contained area with offices, lakes and residences
  • Bandra Kurla Complex nearby: for those working in BKC

Getting around

Distances are short on the map but long in traffic. The coastal road, sea links and expanding metro have improved travel times. Choosing a home near your office makes a big difference to quality of life.

Housing

Mumbai has some of the highest residential rents in India. Space is limited, and good flats in sought-after areas are let quickly. Many expatriates rely on company-arranged housing or relocation agents.

Climate

Hot and humid most of the year, with heavy monsoon rains from June to September. Plan your arrival outside the peak monsoon if you can.

Lifestyle

Mumbai has a rich cultural life, a strong restaurant scene, and a fast pace. Marathi is the state language; Hindi and English are widely used.
