Pune
Pune builds cars and machines and runs big IT parks. It also has one of the largest groups of German and other European companies in India.
The economy
- Automotive and suppliers: vehicle manufacturers and hundreds of component makers in Chakan, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Talegaon
- Engineering and machinery: many European Mittelstand companies have plants here
- IT and capability centres: Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Magarpatta
- Education: a major university city
European engineers often come to Pune to start plants, run quality programmes or lead engineering teams.
Where people live
- Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar: green, popular with expatriates, close to restaurants
- Baner, Aundh and Balewadi: convenient for Hinjewadi IT parks
- Kharadi and Viman Nagar: near eastern IT parks and the airport
Climate
Pune sits on the Deccan plateau at around 560 metres and is milder than Mumbai, with a pleasant winter and a monsoon season.
Lifestyle
A relaxed city compared with Mumbai, three to four hours away by road. A European community, international schools and cultural events make settling in easier. Marathi is the local language; English is used in business.
