EU product rules

Tariffs decide your price. EU product rules decide whether you can sell at all. Make sure you comply before the first shipment leaves.

Checked October 2026

CE marking

Many product groups, including machinery, electrical equipment, toys, medical devices, construction products and personal protective equipment, must carry CE marking. It shows that the product meets EU requirements. Depending on the product, you self-assess or involve a notified body. You also need technical documentation and an EU declaration of conformity.

General product safety

The General Product Safety Regulation, applicable since December 2024, sets safety obligations for consumer products, including those sold online. It requires an economic operator in the EU responsible for the product and traceability information on the product.

Chemicals

The REACH regulation covers chemicals on their own and in products. Non-EU manufacturers often appoint an "only representative" in the EU to handle registration. Restricted substances lists apply to textiles, leather, toys and many other goods.

Food and agricultural products

Food exports must meet EU limits on pesticide residues, contaminants and additives, and come from approved establishments where required. Labelling must follow EU rules, including allergens and nutrition information.

Labelling and packaging

Labels must be in the language of the country where the product is sold. EU packaging rules are tightening, with requirements on recyclability and reduced packaging.

The EU responsible person

For many products, an EU-based person or company must be named as responsible: an importer, an authorised representative or a fulfilment service provider. If you sell through a distributor, define this role in your contract.

Sector-specific rules

Medical devices, cosmetics, batteries, electronics and pharmaceuticals each have their own detailed rules. Budget time and money for compliance.
