Working in Monaco
Monaco is a small, wealthy principality with strong demand in private banking, luxury hospitality, yachting and services. It is not in the EU, and its hiring rules give clear priority to local and regional candidates, so routes for people coming directly from India are narrow.
The short answer
| EU and Schengen | Not in the EU or formally in Schengen, but there are no border checks with France and entry follows French rules |
| Main route | A work authorisation and work permit from the Monaco Employment Office, requested by the employer |
| Key condition | Local hiring priority: candidates from Monaco and the surrounding region come first |
| Language | French, with English and Italian widely used in business |
| Visa | A long-stay visa for Monaco, applied for through the French consular network |
The hiring priority order
Every vacancy must be registered with Monaco's Employment Office, which checks for priority candidates in this order:
- Monegasque nationals and their families
- Residents of Monaco
- Residents of the neighbouring French municipalities
- Residents of the Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments and the neighbouring Italian regions
An employer can choose a candidate from further away only with objective reasons, for example when no priority candidate has the required skills.
Coming from India
For non-EU nationals who do not already live in Monaco or France, hiring is generally limited to cases with an existing employment relationship, such as a transfer within an international group. The usual sequence is:
- Obtain a long-stay visa for Monaco.
- Apply for a Monaco residence permit, with proof of accommodation.
- The employer obtains the work permit from the Employment Office.
Where the opportunities are
- private banking and wealth management
- luxury hotels, restaurants and events
- yachting and maritime services
- specialist roles in large international groups
Many people working in Monaco live in neighbouring France. See working in France for that route.
